Is the Cross a Symbol of Power?

    Power Series – Part Five

“You will receive power when Holy Spirit comes on you TO BE My representative…” Acts 1:8a

Is the cross a symbol of power?

The way we view the cross matters. The cross is a symbol of submission, suffering, and sacrifice BUT symbol of power? Embedded in the image of the cross are both the ideas of power to overcome and power to give life.

John the Apostle penned, “…the reason Jesus came was to destroy the outworking of the devil.” (I John 3:8). John is referring both to what happened in the spiritual realm through the cross and to what happens in the natural realm through Christ in us.

In the spiritual realm, Jesus took back the title deed to our lives and disarmed the powers and authorities of darkness making a public spectacle of them by the cross (Colossians 2:13-15).

In the natural realm, the cross has become our badge of spiritual authority. All the spiritual authority of heaven is vested in us by way of the cross. Jesus said, “All authority in heaven and earth is given to me therefore I give you authority to go ….” (Matthew 28:18a). Going in His authority empowers us with His power to – heal the sick, deal with the demonic, cure the broken of their brokenness and proclaim the good news of God’s goodness and love now and forever (Matthew 10:5-8).

The cross is a symbol of power – an overcoming, life giving, freeing power! A final question, “If you put on a cross, like a police officer puts on a badge, how would you see yourself and consequently move through the days of your life?”.

    Prayer

Power! Power to be who you intended me to be. Power to do what you need me to do. Oh, King Jesus, my heart longs to rise to new heights of being. My yearning is to go deeper in my relationship with you and to rise higher in spiritual – maturity, authority and capacity. Thank you, Jesus, for inviting me up and thank you, Holy Spirit, for guiding me there! Amen.
